1883 Noelsch Fretless Banjo

This one came to us as a bag of parts from a pal in Florida that jus thought it may as well live here and on a shelf in his garage. We were intrigued by the swan peghead shape, a decorative element we’ve not seen on any other banjo. Though unmarked, on removal of the original inapriatally altered fretboard, we discovered the following penciled graffiti on the walnut neck; 1883 Maker Jacob F Noelsch, Albany, NY. Research in the Albany, NY public library did not find anyone with the last name Noelsch living in the Albany area in the late 1800’s.
