1890’s H.C. Nelson by J.B. Schall. As-Is
Here is a 130-ish year old banjo made by Chicago, Illinois manufacturer J.B. Schall for H.C. Nelson. I have always liked Schall instruments and know that, with some effort, it will be a rather nice banjo. The neck is maple with a 27-3/4” scale ebony fretboard. The spun-over rim is 12” in diameter and 2-1/8” deep. It has 38 brackets. All the ball shoes are original. 26 of the hooks and nuts are original, the others are replacements from various pre World War Two manufacturers. Other hardware includes Champion friction tuners and a well repaired Talon style tailpiece. The wood of the neck and the rim have the original black finish. To make this banjo play well it needs the neck straightened and a neck reset. If you are up for a worthy repair adventure, this banjo is only $500 and we include a vintage bump hard case that also needs repair.
